Getting Started

GAINING ACCESS TO PROCORE

There are several options for instructors who want to gain access to Procore for their classes:

  1. Request Your Own Procore Account: Instructors can gain free access to their own Procore account by sending a request via email or by visiting Procore.org's website (scroll down and select "contact us" at the bottom of the page). A member of the team will set up a demo with the instructor to provide an overview of the platform and initiate the creation of the account. The instructor can invite an unlimited number of students into the account, create new projects, and build their own activities.

  2. Access an Existing Procore Demo Account: Alternatively, instructors and students can utilize a demo account that has been created to provide several interactive construction activities (plan reading and building information modeling scavenger hunts - see instructional video below). Note that this account, which students can access at the same time, is only limited to these activities and does not have all the tools and functionality of the software enabled. Login to Procore on the web or download the Procore Mobile App from the Apple App Store on an iPad or iPhone, and enter username: learn@procore.com; password: #1ProcoreStudent (note that password is case sensitive). Check out our instructional video on how instructors can utilize the BIM and plan reading scavenger hunt activities.

  3. Other Ways to Teach Without an Account: Procore's video-based certification courses allow students to learn the software on their own time and post their certificates of completion to their LinkedIn profiles (especially see the certification course for students). In addition, our Construction 101 interactive course series teaches the fundamentals of construction, and students can explore a variety of free continuing education courses on a variety of construction related topics (more information about these resources can be found at the bottom of the page under "Other Ways to Teach Procore").

SETTING UP YOUR PROCORE ACCOUNT AND ADDING STUDENTS

LOGGING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME

When your Procore account has been created, you'll receive an automated email from Procore with the subject line "Your Procore Account is Ready." Click on the link to login to the software online and set up a password. As the administrator for the account, you'll be able to add other students and instructors (any other instructors you invite can add their own students into their projects, as well). You'll also be able to create an unlimited number of projects and add project materials such as drawings.

Complete the "Concierge Process"
When you have logged into your Procore account for the first time, select the "Company Tools" menu (top center of the screen), and select "Concierge." Complete the initial questions to complete the process (add your logo, personal information, etc. You can skip any steps that you'd like to take care of, like adding your students to the account).

CREATING A PROJECT FOR YOUR STUDENTS

Follow the steps in this document to create a project: Creating a New Project

Now, import your drawings into the new project. You can select any drawings you have as a PDF file, or use a pre-built set we've created called the "Vortex Business Center." Here are instructions on how to import your drawings.

Upload other materials, such as specifications (PDF file), a project schedule (variety of formats supported), or even 3D Models from Navisworks.

We also have a variety of other resources for the Vortex Business Center sample project that you can upload into your Procore account:

INVITING YOUR CLASS

Once you've built out your project, you can invite students to collaborate in your Procore account.

STEP 1: We recommend setting up a "project permission template" for your students in the software before you start adding them.

Project permission templates are how you can limit access to information and functionality in Procore for other users. You'll have "admin" permissions by default (with full functionality). Here are the four different project permission templates for each tool in Procore:

  • None - The tool won't show up at all in the user's account
  • Read Only - The data in the tool can be viewed, but not modified
  • Standard - Grants functionality to do most things in Procore
  • Admin - Administrative user with full functionality and the ability to change the tool's administrative settings

We recommend that you create a customized permission template for your students with your desired permission levels for each tool (many instructors choose to label this as their "student" permission template). We recommend assigning your students with "Standard" or "Admin" permissions for each tool, with the exception of the Directory tool (students should only have "Read Only" access to this tool so they can't lock others out of the account).

To create this customized permission template, follow these instructions (scroll down on this page to the steps for creating a project specific permission template). You'll then be able to select this template when you add students to the account in Step 2, which will assign the correct project permission levels to each student's account when you add them.

STEP 2: Next, you'll add your students to the project.

You can do this in two ways:

  1. Add Students Manually: Here are the steps you'll take to add students one by one (works fine for smaller class sizes). Under the project permission level drop down, you can select your customized student permission template.

  2. Bulk Add Students Using Procore Imports: Download the Procore Imports App (available on Windows 7 systems and higher) and follow these instructions (you'll download and fill out an Excel file with the students' names and other data, and use the Procore Imports App to upload the file back into Procore).

Once the students have been uploaded into the account, go into the Directory tool and click on the orange "Invite" button next to the student's name. This will send an automated email from Procore allowing them to set up a password and become active users in your Procore account.

TEACHING WITH OUR EDUCATIONAL CURRICULA
Procore.org has created in-class exercises and sample presentations (with speaker notes) on a variety of topics and tools in Procore that you can use for teaching with your Procore account. Here is what we have available on our Educational Resources website.
PLAY PROCORE'S BRICK BY BRICK GAME WITH YOUR CLASS
In this game, students will build Lego models of Procore's headquarters and play the role of a Project Manager, Superintendent, or Tradesperson to complete their model (requires your own Procore account). More information about the Brick by Brick game and how to obtain sets can be found here.

OTHER WAYS TO TEACH PROCORE (INDIVIDUAL PROCORE ACCOUNT NOT REQUIRED)

PROCORE STUDENT CERTIFICATION
This video-based student tutorial course teaches students the basics of Procore and how to utilize the software’s most common tools. After passing a final test, students can post their certificates of completion to their LinkedIn profile simply by entering the page’s URL. More advanced students can also take a variety of other role-based certifications, and all of the courses are accessible free and on-demand (students do not need to have access to a Procore account to take them).
INTERACTIVE CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: PLAN READING AND BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING SCAVENGER HUNTS

We've created a special demo account with two plan reading activities and a BIM treasure hunt. Login to Procore on the web or download the Procore Mobile App from the Apple App Store on an iPad or iPhone, and enter username: learn@procore.com; password: #1ProcoreStudent (note that the password is case sensitive).

Check out our instructional video on how instructors can utilize the BIM and plan reading scavenger hunt activities.

CONSTRUCTION EDUCATION 101

Procore.org has created an interactive 3-part course series designed for students called “Construction 101,” where students learn the fundamentals of construction.

  • Construction Project Roles & Responsibilities (Part 1) - This course explores the roles and responsibilities of each construction project stakeholder and the ways in which they work together to deliver a project safely, on time, and on budget.

  • Construction Project Phases (Part 2) - This course describes the three basic phases of a construction project from planning to closeout and explores the processes and common practices that exist in each project phase.

  • Construction Industry Sectors (Part 3) - This course takes a deep-dive into the 5 primary sectors of construction, and describes the different types of structures that are built in each sector.
