Capture Basics
Objective
This section will cover the Where/When/Why/How of documenting your site.
Planning Your Capture
Choosing Your Background:
- Exterior View: Ideal for activities outside the building or before vertical construction starts. Video Walks, 360 photos, and 2D photos will appear on your satellite base map or the latest drone map, giving you a comprehensive view of the surrounding area. Use this view to capture pre-site surveys, underground utilities, and other external activities on the exterior view. This way, you can combine aerial and ground data to easily compare your ground captures with aerial photos (if you've flown drone missions)
- Interior View: This is where your 2D Floor Plans will be located. Once you've uploaded your floor plans, you can capture data directly onto them. Use this view for documenting progress within the building itself, capturing construction progress at different project milestones through the lifecycle of the project.
Best Practice Tip:
It is critical to plan out your walk before you head out. Spending 5-10 minutes sketching out your path in Bluebeam will set you up for success not only that day, but for the duration of the project. The time you spend on the front end will be more than made up on the back end.

Types of Captures
2D Photos
Capture 2D photos from your phone of anything on your job site. Add a 2D photo from your camera roll on your device too. Great for on-the-spot documentation and collaboration.
360 Photos
Best suited for milestone documentation. This process takes slightly longer, but offers a much clearer view of the capture area
Recommended Milestones:
- Pre-Drywall
- Post-MEP Trim
- Post Millwork
- Punch
360 Walks
Use 360 Walks to cover large areas of your site at once. Walks are best used to document weekly documentation, inspections and overall progress tracking; and are the fastest way to document the jobsite
Capturing your Data
To capture any of the types of data mentioned above, follow the steps below:
- Walk to a location in the building you plan to capture
- Open the Insta360 app on your phone or tablet, and make sure you camera is connected. If not connected, follow the on-screen steps to connect it.
- This step can also be done before you leave your desk.
- Sign into the DroneDeploy Ground app, and make sure your camera is connected
- If your camera has previously been paired with the DroneDeploy app, it should pair automatically. If has not previously been paired, follow the on-screen steps to pair it.
- Select the level or floor plan you plan to capture, then select the mode of capture (2D Photo, 360 Pano or Video Walk)
- Locate yourself on the plan
- For 360 Panos: stand still and press the shutter button in the Ground app. You'll here your camera's shutter click, this means the photo has been taken. Move to the next location and repeat these steps.
- For Video Walks: Press the shutter button in the Ground app to start your walk. The app will give you a countdown. When the countdown is finished, start along your pre-planned path. When the walk is finished, press and hold the shutter button to complete your walk, then locate yourself on the plan to lock in your ending location. Move to your next capture location and repeat these steps.
- When you get back to wifi, hit the "Sync" button on the top of the Ground App screen. All of your Panos and Walks will automatically update to your DroneDeploy project
