KAST Best Practices
Objective
This section will dig into the differences between the types of 360 documentation (walks vs. photos), when to use each type, and the best practices to get the most out of your captures.
Concepts
360 Video Walks and 360 Photos both achieve the same objective - documenting your jobsite. While the former will allow you to capture a large area (or several areas) relatively quickly, the latter will result in a much clearer photo of your capture area.
-
Use the recommended documentation type (360 Photo vs Video Walk) and recommended walk path at the appropriate milestones during your project
- 360 Walks
- Garage/Pre-Framing/Core & Shell: To be used before framing is installed. Walk one path near the perimeter of the floor, and another near the center.
- 360 Walks
Note: This is an example of a “Typical” Unit floor Plan. Larger floors, amenity floors, FOH areas, Kitchens etc. likely will require additional walking
- Post-Framing: To be used for weekly walks to document construction progress until/unless 360 Photo Documentation is required. Walking down every Corridor and into every Room on the project
- Example of a good Walk: One continuous path that goes into EVERY room
- Example of a better Walk: Walk the Units individually (i.e. start and stop your walk INSIDE each Unit), and the Corridor as its own walk.
Note: If there are spaces off the Corridor that may require clearer documentation, such as an Electrical Room, you may want to skip that room on your walk and document it with a 360 Photo instead.
- 360 Photos
- Pre-Drywall
- Unit Signoff (By Owner, After Unit Acceptance Inspection is Complete)
- Box Walk Signoff
- Mockup Completion (Interior & Exterior)
-
Plan out your walk
- Planning your walk before you go out can eliminate duplicated capture areas and help you create the most efficient path(s) for walking the project
- TIPS:
- Try to avoid Crossing your own walk path. This may be difficult to achieve, especially in tight spaces, but having clean, uncrossed paths can make the walks easier to view on your Floor Plan
- When walking into a new space, keep your turns consistently in the same direction. E.g. if you made a right when you walked into the first unit, make a right into the first bedroom. Then make a right into the bathroom. Then, once you exit the Bedroom, make a right into the Living Room etc.
-
Performing the Walk
-
Charge your devices
- Make sure your phone/tablet and camera/batteries are fully charged
- Bring your spare batteries
- Walk at a slow, steady pace.
- For clearest images it’s recommended to walk like you’re carrying a cup of hot coffee. Walking too fast will result in blurred images.
- Keep your camera steady
- Use your light if you’re walking into a dark room
- If you walk from a well-lit area to a dark area, slowing down to let the camera exposure calibrate will help with the photo clarity

After the Walk
- Rename your Media
- After you capture a 360 Walk or Photo – give it a name describing what you were capturing
- “L02 P1 Pre-Pour”
- “L04 Garage”
- “L08 Pre-Drywall Progress”
- To achieve this, when on a given Floor, click on the Walks tab under the Media panel of the left Toolbar
- After you capture a 360 Walk or Photo – give it a name describing what you were capturing
- Rename your Media
- Then Select the Walk you want to rename
- Rename your Walk and hit Enter
Note: You can also add a Description to your walk, and change the color if you so choose (see right Toolbar in above image). KAST does not currently have an SOP for color coding, so use whatever works for your project.
