Where do workflows route if sent back using Review and Respond while a temporary replacement is active?

Background

In the Company level Workflows tool, workflow steps can be returned to a previous assignee through the Review and Respond action. When a temporary replacement is active at the time a step is sent back, the system must determine whether to route the item to the primary assignee or the active override.

Answer

The Company level Workflows tool evaluates the current assignee configuration at the time the step is restarted. If a temporary replacement is active for the original assignee, the workflow step is assigned to the temporary replacement rather than the original assignee.

Workflow assignment behavior changes as follows:

  • No Active Temporary Replacement: If a workflow step is sent back using Review & Respond and no temporary replacement is active, the workflow step is reassigned to the original assignee.

  • Active Temporary Replacement: If a workflow step is sent back using Review & Respond while a temporary replacement is active, the workflow step is assigned to the temporary replacement.

Note: This behavior ensures workflow assignments follow the active replacement configuration and continue without interruption during the temporary replacement period.
