Lead Estimator Expectations
Some of the important multiple tasks that a Lead estimator is required to do are:
-
Client Communications: the lead estimator will be the direct connection between KAST, the Design Team, and the Owner.
-
Sep up all the individual parts of the project:
-
Project narrative for ISQFT
-
Inform the Estimating Assistant of the project plan; is this a budget/ hard bid? Selected group of subs vs. blast. Number of hard copies to make…
-
Built the entire project spreadsheet, staffing plan, general conditions/ requirements, details, and project data.
-
Review all and each document that is part of the RFP.
-
Set up the coordination and plug meetings.
-
Work on the anticipated construction schedule.
-
Work on the anticipated logistics.
-
Site visits.
-
Foundations/ Dewatering possible extra meetings.
-
-
It would be required to make sure that lessons learned are applied to all new projects. You may see this here: Y:\Shared\Precon\Post Mortem.
-
Design Review & Feedback
-
With the help of the trade estimators, the leads would review plans and provide feedback to the Owner/ Design Team on what is not typical on the project.
-
Help the trade estimators identify alternate materials and systems
-
Scope specific alternates (cost reduction)
-
Inform the trade estimators of the design metrics included in the base bid.

-
-
Set up and follow up on the RFIs for all projects.
-
-
Time Management
-
Daily goals were established the night before.
-
Split days between projects. ½ day on project A and ½ day on project B.
-
Make sure to check the trade estimator workload.
-
-
Blame Free Communication
-
No one is perfect; we do not want to repeat mistakes, but we need to know about them in order to protect the company.
-
Give feedback to trade estimators if mistakes are found.
-
Golden rule. Treat others as you want to be treated. Be respectful.
