WHAT IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?  

What

The ability to sense, understand, and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions as a source of human energy, information, and influence

Human emotions are the domain of core feelings, gut level instincts and emotional sensations.

When trusted and respected, Emotional Intelligence provides a deeper, more fully formed understanding of ones self and those around us.

How

Beliefs: You have to go the extra mile to get the job done

Perceptions: You leave work earlier than I do

Emotions: I feel resentful that you don't do your part

Behaviors: I begin to avoid you because I resent you and you make me feel bad

 

Why

Emotional intelligence affects your daily interactions and thought processes.  And correctly recognizing it can direct affect your:

SELF-AWARENESS  

Self-Awareness Strategies:

  1. Quit treating your feelings as good or bad
  2. Observe the ripple effect of your emotions
  3. Know who and what pushes your buttons
  4. Keep a journal about your emotions
  5. Stop and ask yourself why you do the things you do
  6. Visit your values
  7. Seek feedback
  8. Get to know yourself under stress
  9. Lean into your discomfort
  10. Feel your emotions physically
  11. Watch yourself like a hawk
  12. Don't be fooled by a bad mood.
  13. Don't be fooled by a good mood, either.
  14. Check yourself
  15. Spot your emotions in books, movies, music, etc.

Self-Management Strategies:

  1. Create an Emotion vs. Reason list
  2. Make your goals public
  3. Count to 10 or sleep on it.
  4. Take control of your self-talk
  5. Talk to a skilled self-manager
  6. Focus your attention on your freedoms, rather than on your limitations.
  7. Speak to someone who is NOT emotionally invested in your problem.
  8. Put a mental recharge into your schedule.
  9. Breath right
  10. Sleep on it
  11. Smile and laugh more
  12. Set aside time in your day for problem solving 
  13. Visualize yourself succeeding
  14. Clean up your sleep hygiene
  15. Stay synchronized

Social-Awareness Strategies:

  1. Greet people by name.
  2. Watch body language.
  3. Develop a back-pocket question.
  4. Plan ahead for social gatherings.
  5. Live in the moment.
  6. Practice the art of listening.
  7. Go people watching.
  8. Step into their shoes.
  9. Seek the whole picture.
  10. Make timing everything
  11. Don't take notes at meetings
  12. Clear away the clutter
  13. Go on a 15-minute tour
  14. Watch EQ at the movies
  15. Understand the rules of the culture game
  16. Test for accuracy
  17. Catch the mood of the room

Relationship Management Strategies:

  1. Enhance your natural communication style.
  2. Avoid giving mixed signals.
  3. Take feedback well.
  4. Only get mad on purpose.
  5. Acknowledge the other person's feelings.
  6. Complement the persons emotions or situation.
  7. When you care, show it.
  8. Explain your decision, don't just make them
