CPR/First Aid Training

1. Purpose 

To provide guidelines and procedures for First Aid and CPR training to ensure that employees are prepared to respond effectively to medical emergencies in the workplace. 

2. Scope 

This SOP applies to all employees, contractors, and visitors who may be required to provide First Aid or CPR in an emergency.   

3. Responsibilities 

  • Site Superintendent: Ensures compliance with the SOP, provides necessary training, and conducts regular assessments. 

  • Safety Director: Coordinates First Aid/CPR training, maintains records, and ensures training materials are up to date. 

  • Employees: Participate in training, maintain certification, and respond to emergencies as trained. 

  • Trainers: Certified professionals who provide First Aid/CPR training and certification. 

4. Definitions 

  • First Aid: Immediate care given to an injured or ill person before professional medical treatment is available. 

  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation): An emergency procedure consisting of chest compressions and breaths to maintain circulatory flow and oxygenation during cardiac arrest. 

  • AED (Automated External Defibrillator): A portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. 

5. Materials and Equipment 

  • First Aid kits 

  • AEDs 

  • Training manikins (for CPR practice) 

  • Training AEDs 

  • Training materials (manuals, videos, guides) 

  • Certification cards and documentation forms 

6. Procedure 

6.1 Training Requirements 

  1. Initial Training: 

  • All employees designated to provide First Aid/CPR must complete an initial training course from a certified instructor. 

  • The course must cover basic First Aid, CPR, and AED usage. 

  1. Refresher Training: 

  • Employees must complete refresher training every two years to maintain certification. 

  • Additional training sessions should be conducted if there are updates to First Aid/CPR guidelines. 

  1. Advanced Training: 

  • Additional training for specific workplace hazards or advanced First Aid may be provided as needed. 

6.2 Training Content 

  1. First Aid Training: 

  • Assessment of the scene and personal safety 

  • Recognizing and responding to common medical emergencies (e.g., bleeding, burns, fractures) 

  • Basic wound care and bandaging techniques 

  • Handling of specific medical conditions (e.g., shock, allergic reactions, asthma attacks) 

  1. CPR Training: 

  • Assessing the need for CPR 

  • Performing chest compressions and rescue breaths 

  • Using an AED 

  • Techniques for adults, children, and infants 

  1. AED Training: 

  • Understanding the function and operation of an AED 

  • AED safety precautions 

  • Hands-on practice with training AEDs 

6.3 Conducting Training 

  1. Selecting Trainers: 

  • Trainers must be certified by recognized organizations such as the American Heart Association (AHA) or the Red Cross. 

  • Trainers should have practical experience and the ability to provide hands-on training. 

  1. Scheduling Training Sessions: 

  • Coordinate training sessions to accommodate all relevant employees.  This will be managed by company safety director. 

  • Ensure training sessions are scheduled regularly to maintain certifications. 

  1. Training Environment: 

  • Conduct training in a suitable environment with enough space for practical exercises. 

  • Provide all necessary training materials and equipment. 

  1. Assessment and Certification: 

  • Assess participants through practical and written evaluations. 

  • Issue certification cards to those who successfully complete the training. 

6.4 Documentation and Record Keeping 

  1. Training Records: 

  • Maintain records of all completed training sessions, including participant names, training dates, and certification details. 

  • Store records in a secure and accessible location. 

  1. Certification Tracking: 

  • Monitor certification expiration dates and schedule refresher training as needed. 

  • Ensure all employees maintain current certifications. 

  1. Incident Documentation: 

  • Document all incidents where First Aid/CPR is administered, including details of the incident and response actions taken. 

6.5 Review and Update 

  1. Annual Review: 

  • Review and update the SOP annually or as needed. 

  • Incorporate feedback from training evaluations, incident reports, and industry best practices. 

  1. Continuous Improvement: 

  • Encourage feedback from employees and trainers to improve the training program. 

  • Implement changes based on lessons learned and new guidelines. 

7. Emergency Procedures 

  • In the event of a medical emergency, employees should follow the procedures learned in First Aid/CPR training. 

  • Ensure that emergency contact numbers are readily accessible. 

  • Provide support until professional medical help arrives.
