Coordination of Owner Supplied/Installed Items

Department: Quality Control

Topic: Onsite Operations

Process: Coordination of Owner Supplied/Installed Items

Objective

Many projects involve Materials, Equipment, Subcontracted Work, Venders, etc. that is done by the owner themselves, or vendors/suppliers subcontracted by the owner.  These areas tend to have higher levels of issues at the time of install, and early coordination can prevent these issues.

Things to Consider

If a project has a large number of owner supplied items, utilizing a spreadsheet to coordinate items can be highly beneficial

Coordination
  1. Items that are OFCI (Owner Furnished, Contractor Installed), OFOI (Owner Furnished, Owner Installed) Should be identified early in the project.  These items may need embeds, blockouts, backing, etc. that will take place early in the project.

  1. Items that can be OFCI/OFOI include but are not limited to:

  • Specialties

  • Signage

  • Landscaping

  • Shelving/Racking

  • Vehicle Lifts, Repair shop equipment

  • Existing equipment coming from current building

  • Communications equipment/LV Equipment

  • Furniture

  • Medical equipment

  • Conveyor Equipment

  1. After identifying OFCI/OFOI items, coordination requirements for these items should be identified and answered.  These requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Power requirements: Phasing, voltage, amperage, plug type

  • Backing/Blocking Required

  • Embeds/Blockouts Required

  • Pathways for future wiring/piping

  • Required RO dimensions

  • Location of related outlets, floor boxes, floor transitions, etc.

  • Heights/locations of wall/ceiling mounted items

  1. To reiterate, a spreadsheet is often the best way to coordinate this info if there is more than a handful of items to coordinate.  Also shop drawings, installation requirements and other critical info for these should be treated like a submittal and uploaded to Procore for reference

Scheduling

OFCI/OFOI work should be shown on overall and 3 week schedules to aid in coordination of work with other subcontractors.
