Equipment Refueling, Fuel Storage

Objective

Equipment fueling procedures and practices are designed to minimize pollution of surface or ground waters. Understanding the procedures for delivering fuel into equipment, mobile fuel tanks, and storage tanks is critical for this purpose. Safety is always the priority.  

Prerequisites

Always shut the engine off before fueling.  

Make sure you are putting the correct fuel in and in the correct labeled tank.  

Never smoke near fueling operations.  

Fire extinguishers should always be located near fueling areas. 

DO NOT use truck fuel cards for equipment fuel. Use your company credit card.  

Regarding on-site fuel storage, tanks need to be double walled.  Consult safety director if tank requires a containment system installed on your jobsite.  

Steps

• Turn off equipment. 

• Remove the cap from the fill tube. 

• Use the proper fuel (diesel/gas/mixed gas) for the equipment it is intended for.  

• Remove the nozzle from the fuel dispenser and lift the fuel dispenser lever.  

• Pull the handle on the dispenser nozzle to begin fueling.  

• Once done, shut off the fuel dispenser and take the nozzle out of the machine and place back on fuel dispenser. 

• Put the cap back on the fill tube and make sure it is secure.

Note: ALL fuel tanks must be labeled correctly for the type of fuel that is in them. All our tanks will have this Danger sign on them.
